Thursday, 1 Sep
7:00 pm

mining-the-truthMark is the Principal Adviser at The Australia Institute. He specialises in mining and energy issues, particularly relating to the economic impacts of coal and gas mining. This role includes research and engaging with stakeholders from communities, industry and government across Australia, particularly in regions heavily impacted by mining.

Mark is also a successful visual artist who undertakes major commissions in Australia and overseas.

Large mining and gas projects gain approval largely on the basis of claims jobs and economic benefits. In fact while some people benefit, resource projects provide few jobs and many existing businesses and industries are left worse off. This presentation will examine the questionable economics behind the claims of the mining industry, the actual experience of mining regions and some of the broader economic issues at play.

Meet at 7pm on Thursday, September 1st at Kent House, opposite Central Park. Discussion will be followed by a light supper and an opportunity for people to talk informally. Gold coin donation appreciated. Everyone is welcome.
